First of all, why would we want to have life on Mars. Well, sooner than you think, the world will become overpopulated. This will then cause famines, lack of resources, overcrowding, and other horrible things. One way to solve this is to live on Mars. Then, this problem would be solved. However, before this can happen, we must cultivate Mars and make it habitable. This whole web page deals with the cultivation of Mars.

Second, why Mars? Well, it is the planet that we could most likely live on. It has ice which we could melt for water. Most scientists even think that Mars used to be similar to Earth. One famous old astronomer was looking at mars and he claimed to see channels where water used to flow. If you look at this picture, you can see what he saw. Now a days, we have spacecarfts orbiting Mars which return the same images of canyons. These suggest that there used to be water on that planet. Even now, Mars is still physically similar to Earth. Both have days that are about 24 hours and both have seasons. These are important because to cultivate Mars we would need to grow plants. These similarities allow us to do so. Differences though are that Martian years are about twice as long and also the gravity is about 1/3 of Earth's. However, Scientists think that the plants would be able to adapt.

Some other planets that are possibilities for us cultivating are Venus, Titan, and Europa. However, various things prevent us from doing so. Also, compare it to other planets in our system. Many are also too far away. If you would like to compare mars to 2 other planets, go to the charts section. This is a chart from Scientific America. Therefore Mars is our best bet for life even though right now it is too cold, dry, and the atmosphere is too thin.
